Karen Chessman

An expert in Human Resources, Karen specialises in organisational change/change management, restructuring, employee relations, industrial relations, succession planning, performance management and performance rewards.

Karen is a fully qualified HR professional with over 22 years’ experience in the industry, 17 of which have been in Higher Education. Her last role within HE was at the University of Surrey as the Director of HR (Operations).

She has been the HR lead on a number of strategic projects relating to organisational-wide restructures, change programmes, and the creation of new businesses within the university setting. She was the primary lead in trade union negotiations with successful outcomes and is comfortable delivering difficult conversations or coaching others with such challenges.

She understands the importance of the management and development of people in order to make a positive impact on organisations, while ensuring that any issues or challenges are managed well.

She is committed to delivering a professional HR service which meets business objectives. While an organisation should always be cognisant of policies and procedures, she always places the business need first in finding a solution and assessing risk. She prides herself on building positive relationships with staff at all levels and seeking to find practical solutions for senior management.

Outside of work, Karen is a proud wife and mother of two boys. She enjoys spending time with my family, walking and going to comedy nights.

Karen is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (FCIPD).
