Alan has over a decade of experience in large, complex change programmes across higher education and the public sector. Through his work, he delivers excellent user experiences, improved operational performance and efficiencies.

Alan has joined SUMS to bring human-centred design to the range of expertise that we offer. Alan has been transforming professional services on the UCL Transforming Our Professional Services (TOPS) Programme since 2018. During that time, amongst other things, he has helped improved the quality of services provided to the UCL community. Including the introduction of a low-code development platform that their IT division use to rapidly build software applications at a much lower cost; and the introduction of a new service to support researchers delivering projects with industry partners (titled the Innovation Service).

He is a senior service designer with experience in digitising processes and mapping user experiences. He uses a combination of social research and design techniques to understand user requirements and co-design solutions with students, researchers and staff. As well as a SUMS Associate, Tom is Co-Founder of Social Origin, a service design studio focused on creating simple and inclusive services.

Alan is a qualified Business Architect and PRINCE2-certified project manager. He also has qualifications in User Experience design from the School of UX, as well as Business Analysis, Software Testing and Agile Practice from the British Computer Society (BCS). He has been working as an independent consultant since 2014, helping organisations understand the people at the heart of their services.

When not running his service design agency, he home educates his three children and follows the MK Dons.
