David specialises in university transformation, and he has particular expertise in organisation design and the development of fit-for-the-future target operating models.

Previously Director of Operations at one of the UK’s largest universities, he led a directorate of 200 staff across the areas of campus administration, strategic projects and change. He has led complex business change projects across the globe with management experience forged in retail and local government as well as higher education. David has a track record of combing cost efficiency, business design and process improvement with culture change and staff development to encourage modern, effective and value for money professional services.

Having delivered top-rated assignments for some of the largest and most highly regarded universities in the world, a snapshot of his achievements include the increase of student satisfaction levels from 85% to 96%, the reduction of a large university’s recurrent cost base by £10m, the unification of two schools with 300 employees into one single, high-performing unit, and the consolidation of 34 departments into five larger hubs connected by real-time systems and data.

David’s recent projects at SUMS include the design of fit-for-the-future target operating models, a strategic review of a large university’s subsidiary companies and audits of university approaches to portfolio management and governance.

An alumnus of Warwick Business School, David has a Master’s degree in Public Management and is familiar with the application of methodologies including PRINCE2, MSP, Lean and McKinsey 7S.

David is also a devoted, but long-suffering, supporter of Preston North End.
