Professor Mike Thomas
Professor Mike Thomas has nearly forty years’ experience in the National Health Service and Higher Education sector having worked in senior clinical and management roles. In Higher Education, he held management posts across five different universities, (pre and post-92), including Head of School, Dean, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and latterly Vice-Chancellor.
In the NHS, Mike was a Mental Health Clinical Specialist and Psychotherapist specialising in Eating Disorders, Differential Diagnosis, and Trauma work with military veterans. Mike is currently Chair of an NHS Trust providing Acute and Community provision and Co-founder and lead for the NW NHS Chairs Forum.
Mike has co-edited three best-selling textbooks, (two on mental health, one on compassionate leadership), and has contributed chapters to a further thirteen MH or Healthcare texts, over seventy published articles and presented at well over two hundred national/international conferences as well as holding membership of regional and national policy-making bodies.
Mike has been the recipient of several national and international awards for his mental health work including Visiting status in both Australia and the USA universities, the Queens Royal Alexandra Corps Medallion, Florida Veterans Medal, North England HE Leader of the Year and the Lloyds Top Fifty Global Leader, (2018).
Mike has established a staff and student mental health service in one university and led the development of its Medical School to full GMC license status and currently act as a consultant to NHS and LA organisations to support staff mental health and wellbeing.
