These roles were both strategic and managerial as many of the professional services reported directly to Bernie, as did the Faculty deans. During that time he has been involved in most aspects of University business, leading on Learning and Teaching and Student Satisfaction, as well as partnerships. Then as DVC, on Strategic Planning, Estates and Digital Management, Distance Learning, and Health and Wellbeing for both Staff and Students. Bernie has significant expertise in recruitment, admissions and widening participation having developed and led those areas in the University

Bernie has led change and restructuring in a number of areas in the University from Registry and Recruitment to developing a portfolio of distance learning programmes, working with external providers. He also led the University in improving student satisfaction, taking the University from 28th in the rankings to 1st in 3 years, with the award of Best University for Student Experience in the UK from the Times/Sunday Times in 2013.

Bernie is passionate about developing skills in others at all levels and was the co-chair for 4 years of the highly successful £40M HEFCE/OfS-funded Institute of Coding, a collaboration between Universities and Industry partners (ranging from Amazon and Microsoft to small SMEs) delivering skills training at all levels and with a target of widening participation. Over 900,000 new learners accessed IoC courses over the 3.5 years of the programme. And he is also a member of an OfS advisory panel on skills training.

Bernie has had training in coaching and has mentored/coached several academics at Bath and Imperial along with others outside of University and is a mentor for the UKRI Future Leaders Programme.

Bernie is the chair of trustees of a local school multi-academy trust and a trustee of the charity, the Bath Institute of Rheumatic Diseases. On free days, he can often be found on the golf course, or playing tennis with his son.
