Glen brings expertise in research strategy, policy and partnerships to support universities to achieve secure and sustainable collaborations and deliver ambitious and impactful research.

Glen spent a decade at UK Research and Innovation leading the extensive Urban Transformations portfolio of international research partnerships before taking up the role of deputy director for UKRI China. After six years with UKRI China, he was appointed Director of Research at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China where he oversaw the development of the institution’s first research strategy, doubled research income, and implemented new digital systems for research management across the university. He has now returned to the UK, starting work as a consultant to share his knowledge and expertise and joined SUMS as an associate in 2024.

Glen is particularly adept at strategic analysis, research risk governance, government affairs and stakeholder management, policy development and implementation, facilitating partnerships and collaboration – especially in complex and international settings, change management, and the use of research management data.

Glen started out doing a geography PhD using poststructuralist approaches to theorise privilege and marginalisation and he is now a volunteer career mentor for young LGBTQ+ people. He also enjoys long-distance cycling, table-top gaming, theatre and spoken-word poetry, and practices ju jitsu after a 20-year break from the sport.
