Paul Roberts

Paul is a specialist in environmental management and organisational carbon reduction. His areas of expertise cover leadership, development and delivery of sustainability strategy, policy and implementation plans, stakeholder engagement, change management and sustainability governance.  

Paul has 25 years’ experience advising and leading organisational change, delivering and embedding carbon reduction, environmental management and improved sustainability. He brings an in-depth knowledge of measures that can be taken to steer organisations towards demonstrably better sustainability outcomes, improved resource efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions across Greenhous Gas Protocol scopes 1, 2 and 3. 

He has recent experience helping higher and further education institutions to develop appropriate responses to the interrelated climate and ecological challenges, engaging stakeholders in development of policy and plans. He is currently working with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to embed sustainability and carbon reduction across UWE Bristol, and has recently overseen sustainability action planning across a number of higher education, further education and non-educational organisations. 

His recent experience includes leading the high performing multi-disciplinary UWE Bristol sustainability team, and chairing the university’s climate action & sustainability committee, biodiversity group and plastics action group. His areas of expertise span carbon management, environmental management systems, circular economy, waste & resources management, sustainable travel and nature restoration. He is experienced in the application of a range of sustainability tools and standards in higher education settings. 

During his career he has advised clients as diverse as the State of Jersey, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Bath Spa university, Hartpury University and College, and Arnolfini gallery. He was a significant contributor to the Climate Commission for Higher and Further Education’s Climate Action Toolkit for the higher education sector. 

Before joining higher education, Paul developed a range of useful skills through his career spanning environmental regulation with the Environment Agency, community engagement with Sustrans and environmental consultancy with Resource Futures.  

Paul loves to be outside walking the dog, running or on his bike. He’s a committee member of a local woodland and wildlife group.
